Ten prison officers have been suspended on suspicion of smuggling mobile phones into one of Britain's top security jails.Four women are thought to be among those under investigation at Wakefield jail, West Yorks, which holds some of the country's most dangerous offenders.
They face allegations of smuggling after eight mobile phones, top-up cards and receipts were found in a bag of sugar. The discovery came as part of a five-month investigation into an alleged phone racket at the category A jail. inmate Brian McBride sparked a huge security alert after being caught with several mobiles which he "hired" to murderers, rapists and child sex offenders.
An insider revealed: "It raises a number of serious security concerns, not least about offenders making contact with other criminals on the outside without our knowledge.
Wakefield holds 247 murderers, including Sarah Payne's killer Roy Whiting and cannibal fiend Robert Maudsley.West Yorkshire Police confirmed they are investigating the allegations but said no arrests have been made.Pregnant prison officer Donna Stanton, 27, was bailed at Luton crown court yesterday after denying having an affair with a con and giving him a phone.
